India is a diverse country where food and dialect change every hundred miles. A country with 5,638 daily newspaper in 101 languages is certainly rich in heritage and cultural values. It is said that there are as many festivals as the number of days in a year, it may be big, small or even unheard by locals. From October onward things become more festive, there is Dussehra, Diwali, Durga Puja, Navratra, Guru Nanak Jayanti, Christmas, lohri and wedding season.
But here we’re focused on psytrance festivals and places to escape into to rejuvenate body and soul. Goa state would be peaking in December, as the season starts in October itself, there would be a lot of EDM, techno and psytrance events. For every music listener, there is a dancefloor and for every hiker, there is a hill.
Hill Top Goa New Year’s Eve
It goes without saying that Hill Top, Vagator is an iconic place to party, escape mind and make friends. Every year they do New Year & Holi party, with great music & artists line up. Attendees are huge and broad, you can catch up with people with different nationalities. This year party is scheduled on 31st Dec and 1st Jan 2020 with headliner Electric Universe, Vertical Mode, Ajja, etc, check their FB page event here.
As Parvati Records turns 20, here is another gig planned on 18th Jan 2020 called HillTopia which is in collaboration with Guiseppe of Parvati records. TAS visuals are promised along with decor by Hybrid UV. Moreover, they have three days Hill Top Festival which starts from 7th Feb to 9th Feb 2020.
As the season starts in October, Hill Top is also doing a season-opening party a.k.a Sunday ritual on 6th Oct 2019. There are many parties happening I will fall short of words mentioning all here. Plan B (formally known as UV Bar), in Anjuna, is also doing an opening party this October in the first weekend i.e. 3rd Oct to 6th Oct 2019. They have been doing gigs regularly.
It’s not always about partying, one can go there day time to sit and relax, eat food, drink beer, smoke and peacefully explore the place. I would name a few more places like – Shiva Valley (in Anjuna), Gurubar (in Anjuna, they play rock n roll, reggae and host live music), Curlie’s (in Anjuna), visit Chapora, Morjim and Arambol beach for a better stay, yogic & meditative time.
Calangute and Baga beach would be too mainstream for psy heads, but one should visit, at least once, popular and heritage places to know history and rhyme with the vibe of the place. I’ve linked a post to 43 top tourist places in Goa, check here.
NYE in Rajasthan
Rajasthan is the largest state by the area covered in India, it shares a border with Pakistan in the west. The state has rich folk music, ancient architect, and handicraft. To celebrate New Year eve this 2019, here is Earthing Music Festival which is scheduled on 31st Dec 2019 to 2nd Jan. It will be a wide-open experience in the sandalwood forest. Location is near Kanak Sagar lake in Dugari, check out the line-up and other details on the event page.
One can explore nearby areas and other destination such as Jaipur (170 KM from venue), Pushkar (210 KM from venue and known for Holi festival which comes in March), and Jaisalmer which is a bit far i.e. 650 KM from the venue. To explore traditional fairs and festivals of Rajasthan, check this list. Magnetic Field Festival, in December, is also a well discussed among electronic and alternate folk music lovers, check other big music festivals of the state here.
Darjeeling and Gangtok
Well, there would be no public psychedelic trance event, as far as I know, Gangtok might have private scene which shouldn’t suppose to discuss here. There is much more to see in these valleys and soak yourself in the Gorkha land. Darjiling is in the state of North Bengal and Gangtok is the capital of Sikkim. Distance between both is about 100 km and takes about 4 hours, check this post which we posted last year about Going from Darjeeling to Nathula and places to explore. Note: Foreign nationals are not allowed to go Nathu La (which is border pass between India and China)
Sikkim is a beautiful place, divided into four districts – East, South, west and North Sikkim which is literally heaven. The district also holds name for World’s highest lake, Gurdongmar at 5,183 Metre or 17,800 ft, and World’s highest golf course called Yak Course in Kupup which is at 3,970 Metre or 13,025 ft.
During this time, the temperature will be low and few places could be closed due to road blockage. But Darjeeling and Gangtok will be open and with maximum visibility (summertime i.e around May or June visibility is very low due to foggy clouds).
There are more events being lined up in delhi, himachal, kodaikanal, chennai and rishikesh. As they are not yet finalized, so I haven’t added them yet. I will update this post.
